The under-14 boys and under-16 girls were the first to hit the water on Thursday before pro junior events started on Friday.
The Oz Grom Open is presented by O'Neill and is run by Surfing NSW with support from the Lennox-Ballina Boardriders Club.
Surfing continues over the weekend from 7am with the under-18 boys and girls heats.
Finals from under-12s through to the pro junior division will take place on Tuesday.
